About this work
A muscular, bare-chested man sits cross-legged, gripping an upright rifle and resting his other hand on his knee. Beaded necklaces, a feathered headband, and a white armband mark his dress; a bleached animal skull rests on the ground before him. Behind him, ochre rock-art figures of animals, hunters, and a spiral sun cover one side of the wall, while dark tepee silhouettes stand against the night on the other.
The figure is modeled with realistic shading in warm terracotta and deep shadow, giving weight to muscle and bone, while the background paintings stay flat and graphic by contrast. Side lighting catches the rifle's metal and the skull's teeth, and the stillness and gaze give the portrait a calm, dignified gravity.
